Congrats to the Elk Grove High School grad. Here's a recent news release:
During Memorial Day weekend, Elk Grove's Brian Detrick competed in the Atlanta ProAm Waterski Event in Atlanta, Georgia. Thirteen of the top men slalom skiers in the world were competing for the "Winner Take All" purse. Detrick ran five buoys at 38 off on an 11.25 meter rope in the prelims and squeaked into the finals with the 8th and final spot. He set the bar with 2 1/2 @ 39 off on a 10.75 meter rope in the finals.
Italy's Thomas Degasperi, 2011 World Champion, took home the title with 3 @ 41 off on a 10.25 meter rope. He edged out 2012 Master's Champion and currently ranked #1 skier in the world, Nate Smith (2 1/2 @ 41 off). Detrick finished in 5th place.
This is his first top-5 finish at a world class event in his young career. He will be in California training and skiing in local tournaments for the next two months before he heads to Milwaukee, Calgary, Orlando and Brentwood for more professional events on the world stage.
In January 2012, Brian was on the six-member United States University Team that competed and won the gold at the FISU University World Water Ski Championships in Santiago, Chile. In March, he went "down under" and placed 3rd at the Australian Open.
