Weds. Notebook/Freitas In Rockhounds' Starting Lineup

OK, it's Tuesday, but I am heading out camping for a few days. So here's the Weds. Notebook a day early:

EGHS' David Freitas has been assigned to the Oakland A's Double-A affiliate in Midland, Tex., and was in the starting lineup Sunday, two days after being traded to the A's by the Nationals for A's major league catcher Kurt Suzuki. Freitas was in the Advanced-A Carolina League all season and doing quite well.

One of his Elk Grove teammates, Dwight Childs, has seen regular action over the past month behind the plate with the Carolina Mudcats, the Cleveland Indians’ Advanced-A squad in the Carolina League. Childs is batting .189 in 30 games played with the Mudcats.

Raymond Hernandez, another former Herd player (the three of them were all a part of Elk Grove's '05 and '06 Section championship teams), has done well this summer in the California League. He’s 5-6 with a 5.24 ERA in 18 starts for the Visalia Rawhide.

Former Bradshaw Christian High School player Brady Dragmire is coming out of the bullpen for the Toronto Blue Jays’ team in the Gulf Coast Rookie League. He’s 0-2 with a 0.79 ERA.

There are now three former Pleasant Grove High School pitchers in the minor leagues. Kyle Castro is still working in the Texas Rangers’ instructional camp in Arizona and has not yet been assigned to a team.

Also in the Rangers’ organization is Kyle Devore. Just the past week, he’s become a starter for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the Carolina League after beginning the season in the bullpen. Devore has a 1-1 record with a 4.01 ERA in 17 games, three of them starts.

Dylan Chavez, who was drafted in June by Boston, is now with Greenville in the Class-A South Atlantic League.

Former Laguna Creek Cardinal Casey Weathers has been a relief pitcher all season with the Tennessee Smokies, the Chicago Cubs’ Double-A affiliate in the Southern League. He’s 4-2 with a 5.97 ERA in 25 appearances.

Cory Vaughn, son of former major leaguer Greg Vaughn, is taking after his father by becoming a power-hitting outfielder in the pros. Playing for the Mets’ Advanced-A team in St. Lucie, Fla., Vaughn has 18 homers and 19 doubles in 105 games. He’s batting .241 this season and has stolen 16 bases. …

Pleasant Grove grad Marrisa Wimbley is now a University of Hawaii Rainbow-Wahine. The former Eagle basketball standout was inked last week by Hawaii’s new coach Laura Beeman.

“Marissa is going to give us added depth at point guard,” Beeman said. “She has the ability to defend 94 feet and she can get to the basket when the opportunity presents itself. Marissa has a great work ethic and will push her teammates on a daily basis.”

In leading the Eagles to the Delta River League championship last season, Wimbley averaged 14.8 points, three assists and four rebounds a game. She was also named the school’s female athlete of the year. …
