After weeks of bouncing around the summer AAU basketball circuit saying he was enrolling at Capital Christian High School, junior 6-8 center Malik Pope is back enrolled at the high school he concluded the academic year at, Laguna Creek. Pope who led Luther Burbank deep into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs a year ago, left the Sacramento school late in the year when his family moved to Elk Grove.
Initially, Pope’s mother told school administrators Malik was headed to Sheldon, but instead was enrolled in Laguna Creek, the school closest to their home.
Transfer papers to Capital Christian sat on athletic director Brian LoForte’s desk, but never were signed. That’s probably because Pope likely would not have been eligible to play at Capital Christian due to CIF transfer rules.
Pope’s presence on the Cardinals’ team will add much needed height to a squad that has several quick, good-shooting guards. ….
Soccer World/Elk Grove’s womens’ indoor soccer team are
national champions. This past weekend in Las Vegas the defending Premier Arena
Soccer League titlists won the championship for the second year in a row,
according to coach Peter Ochoa.
The team was primarily made up of Elk Grove residents. They
won the league’s Pacific Division with an 8-0 record this summer. …
Former Laguna Creek High School and Cal-Berkely wide
receiver Jeremy Ross had a 33-yard touchdown reception Sunday in the
Indianapolis Colts’ 38-3 win over St. Louis.
Ross caught his TD pass, his only reception of the game
early in the fourth quarter from backup quarterback Chandler Harnish. …
Former Elk Grove offensive tackle Kenny Wiggins got plenty
of playing time in the 49ers’ 17-6 win over Minnesota Saturday. This is his
second time in the past two years the former Fresno State player is trying to
make the San Francisco roster. ….
Since joining the Midland Rockhounds on Aug. 5, David
Freitas has gone just three-for-18 at the plate with a double and two RBI’s.
The former Elk Grove and CRC catcher was traded to the Oakland A’s by the
Washington Nationals in exchange for major league catcher Kurt Suzuki. ….
Grant football superstar Shaq Thompson is in camp at the
University of Washington, finally. He was selected in early June in the 18th
round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Players’ draft, got a reported
$45,000 signing bonus, plus a promise of $100,000 over the next four years if
he stuck with baseball.
Thompson spent much of the summer with the Gulf Coast League
Red Sox where he was 0-for-39 at the plate with 37 strikeouts.
As one beat writer recently wrote, “He’s so fast, why
doesn’t he try to lay down a bunt?”
He won’t worry about that for a few more months now because
Thompson was one of the nation’s top defensive backs out of high school and
likely will start for the Huskies at
safety this fall. ….
USA Rugby, the governing body for Rugby within the United
States announced their 2011-2012 Academic Collegiate All-Americans August 2.
Ryan Baughman, a Biology Major at CSU Monterey Bay and graduate of Pleasant
Grove High School, was named to the prestigious team which included several
students from California including UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and Santa Clara
University.
As the Otter’s #2, or 'Hooker,' Ryan is a solid leader on
the CSUMB Rugby squad, and has set an example for his peers earning a 3.7 GPA.
