Coulson Signs With Mtn.Lions/James Commits To Arizona

Elk Grove High School graduate Ryan Coulson has signed a contract with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. Coulson, a long snapper who played defensive end at the University of Nevada, is a 2006 graduate of Elk Grove.

After spending four years at Nevada, he was signed as a free agent by the New England Patriots last July but was injured in the first day of training camp.

The Mountain Lions are expected to announce their final 54-man roster soon. Opening Night is Friday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. at Raley Field, when the Lions take on the Omaha Nighthawks. …

Pleasant Grove basketball player Dejza James has given a verbal commitment to play her college basketball at Arizona, according to Surewest Sports’ Mike Finnerty.

James, a six-foot forward, averaged 13 points and nine-and-a-half rebounds a game in leading the Eagles to the Delta River League championship last season.

“She worked hard to put herself in position to play at the highest level,” James’ AAU coach, Michele Massari, told Finnerty. “She’s a terrific scorer and rebounder whose skill set is versatile and she does all the little things needed to win games.”

Massari coaches the Cal Sparks during the summer and is the girls’ basketball coach at Sacramento High School, as well. …

Two local athletes qualified for a place on the AAU USA Jr. National Taekwondo team. Alex Colley, a senior at Pleasant Grove High School, went undefeated at the team trials. Sarah Hilaman of Acampo also made the national team.

Both will travel in January to train with the U.S. coaches, and then in the spring will travel to an International event representing the USA.
