PG Beats Franklin, Looks Strong in 2013

Sheldon's boys' basketball team has received lots of ink and attention, and rightfully so, going into this winter. But, watch out for Pleasant Grove, who was impressive Wednesday night in defeating Franklin, 68-45.

The Eagles will next be in action Friday when they play at Elk Grove, another team that looks good already.

In girls' basketball, Elk Grove was thumped by McClatchy, 52-21, as Michelle Wong had eight points to lead the Herd.

Andraquay Quinnine scored a career-high 18 points to help Xavier University of Louisiana earn a 75-67 double-overtime victory against Bethel (Tenn.) in a matchup of ranked NAIA Division I women's basketball teams Wednesday.

Quinnine is a 5-foot-9 junior guard from Elk Grove. She is a graduate of Franklin High School and Consumes River College.

Quinnine made a career-best 8-of-9 free throws and helped the Gold Nuggets finish with a season-high 29 free throws -- one less than the school record -- in 34 attempts. She scored in double figures for the sixth time this season and the third time in four games.

Xavier is 10-2 and ranked ninth in NAIA’s Division I rankings.

Williams Resigns As Sheldon Volleyball Coach

Sheldon High School’s long-time volleyball coach Randy Williams has submitted his resignation. This past season the Huskies were 1-14 overall and winless in the Delta River League matches.

The school’s football coach, Josh Crabtree, also submitted his official resignation in early December.

“The Sheldon Athletic staff thanks both of these outstanding men for their years of service and wishes them nothing but the best for the future,” athletic director Denise Aguilar wrote in a news release.

Levin Ready For PGA Tour Start In Hawaii

Former Elk Grove H.S. golfer Spencer Levin has been cleared to compete in the Sony Hawaiian Open that begins Jan. 10.

Levin’s PGA Tour season ended in late September when he underwent surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.

"It was a weird deal," Levin told PGATour.Com. "I was just playing golf with my buddies and hit a shot and felt something pop in between my wrist and thumb.”

According to Levin's agent, Kevin Canning, the surgeon said the ligament was completely detached.

Levin, who finished his fourth full season on the PGA Tour in 2012, posted three top-10s, finished 83rd in the FedEx Cup standings and 68th in tour money winnings with a little more than $1.2 million.
