EG, Folsom Hope To
Snap Vacaville Win Streak
Both Elk Grove and Folsom, the Delta Valley Conference’s and
the Delta River League’s wrestling champions, respectively, will hope to end
Vacaville’s four year hold on the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division I team dual
championship on Saturday.
The meet starts at 9 a.m. at Lincoln High School in
Stockton.
Vacaville has won this event 13 of the past 15 years and the
only two years they didn’t – in 2005 and 2009- Elk Grove won it. The Herd
grapplers placed second seven times during that stretch of Bulldog domination.
Elk Grove sent only seven wrestlers to a tournament Jan. 19
in Albany, but they all did so well that the Herd finished second in the team
standings.
Six of the Herd grapplers placed first in their weight
classes while one was second.
Placing first was Tristan Scott (106), Ethan Larrabee (120),
Terell Turner (132), Scott Votino (195), Thomas Aquila (220) and Jaharee Taylor
(285).
Kelani Tonge at 113 pounds was second at his weight.
Franklin’s wrestlers placed third that same day at the CIT
Tournament in Morro Bay.
Tyler Hecht (285) won the championship in an exciting match.
This was Tyler's third tournament championship this year.
DJ Harper placed 7th at 160 pounds.
Placing sixth were Adam Borges (138) and Antonio
Jimenez (126). Arman Haq (145) and Ali Khan (132) both finished fourth while
Josh Villaflor (120) finished third.
Head coach Fred Banks said they had to leave Evan Fong
(106) and Joey Banks (182) at home due to illness and
injury. Banks was the number one seed at the Morro Bay tournament.
