My congratulations to John DePonte and his Pleasant Grove Eagles on their 73-60 defeat of Deer Valley Saturday in the NorCal Regional Basketball Tournament's Division I championship game.
The Eagles now will face Santa Monica H.S. Friday at 8 p.m. for the State Championship at Sleep Train Arena.
EG Loses First Game
Today I was at Campolindo High School in Moraga to watch Elk Grove lose its first baseball game of the season to the Cougars, 4-2. Dave Smith had a rough fourth inning with a pair of walks, a double off a badly-played line drive and an RBI single. Otherwise he pitched pretty well to a team that has five players heading to a Division I college this fall.
The Herd was held to only four hits (one of them a solo homer by Mikey Wright in the second inning) by Oregon State-bound pitcher Trent Shelton.
Elk Grove will face another tough test Tuesday when they travel to Oak Ridge.
Pinkerton BBall Undefeated
Got an email this week that the boys' basketball team at Elizabeth Pinkerton JHS was undefeated in league play this year for the second season in a row. Congrats to all those fine young men.
Sutton To Attend Simpson
Connor Sutton, EGHS' do-it-all point guard from last season, will be signing a letter of intent to play at Simpson College next year. Connor averaged 10 points, five assists and one steal per game. Simpson College is a NAIA school and competes in the California Pacific Conference. His Herd coach Rudy Ortega wrote: "He will be a great addition to their program and will make an immediate impact."
Crash At Marysville Raceway
As I am writing this Saturday evening, I am following a breaking story about a crash in a sprint car race at Marysville Raceway which resulted in several injuries. This quickly reminded of Elk Grove's own Kyle Larson's crash at Daytona a couple weeks back. By the way, I heard Larson was second to Kyle Busch today at a Nationwide race event.
