He's a River Cat!

We've known this for a little while, so did he, but on Friday the Oakland A's officially put former Elk Grove High School and Cosumnes River College catcher David Freitas on the roster of the Sacramento River Cats.

So, for the first time since the spring of 2009, Freitas gets to play baseball in Sacramento on a regular basis.

He was a part of the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I championship teams at Elk Grove between 2005 and 2007 (The Herd hasn't won it since he left). He then played for Tony Bloomfield at CRC for a couple years before heading off to play at the University of Hawaii for a year.

In the summer of 2010, Freitas was drafted in the 16th round by the Washington Nationals. He signed, foregoing his senior year in college, and played for Vermont in the New York/Penn League. In 2011, the Nationals placed him in Class A baseball with Hagerstown (Md.). He moved up a notch to "High A" with Potomac in the Carolina League for the 2012 season, but last August was traded to the A's in exchange for catcher Kurt Suzuki.

He finished the summer with Double-A Midland in the Texas League.

Freitas then went to spring training in February with the A's for the first time, hit the ball real well and earned a spot with the Triple-A River Cats. He'll wear uniform #31 and share catching duties with Luke Montz, six years his elder, who also started his career in the Nationals' organization.
