The Herd wrestlers competed this weekend at the CaliforniaCoast Classic at Aptos High School in Santa Cruz. After a fifth place finish the previous weekend at the Zinkin Tournament in Clovis, this time
they showed they were the big boys on the block.
Elk Grove won the team title by a full fifty points over
Ponderosa, 238.5 – 188.5. Jesuit
finished sixth in the team standings. More than 30 high schools were
represented at this meet. Clovis finished in seventh place while Buchanan was
11th.
The Herd had ten wrestlers place at the Coast Classic. There
were only four weight groups where Elk Grove did not place a wrestler in the
top eight.
Freshman Jacob Seto was fourth at 106 pounds. Roger Monroe,
another freshman, was third and Ennis, fifth, at 113 pounds. At 120, Jesse Arroyo
finished in fourth place.
Tonge placed fifth at 126 pounds. Terrell Turner was fifth
at 132 pounds. Sperber finished sixth at
138 pounds. Kaleb Vetterli was fifth at 145.
Taking fifth place at 152 pounds was Jason Garcia. Jacob
Rosales was eighth at 182. Tyler Yates placed fifth at 285 pounds.
Holiday Tournaments
Galore
There’s no rest for the local boys’ basketball squads this weekend.
Just about every team was playing in a tournament.
Elk Grove (6-8 thus far this season) won one game and lost two
at the Jaime Angley Hornet Classic at Enterprise High School in Redding.
Laguna Creek (8-4) went 2-1 at the Modesto Christian
Tournament this weekend, including an impressive 85-53 win over Deer Valley.
Richard Reed had 26 points on the strength of ten-for-19 shooting from the
floor. They have a game against Salesian
High School on Monday, Dec. 30.
Pleasant Grove (6-5) played at the Holiday Hardwood
Invitational at Westlake High School. They opened the tournament with a rematch
of the CIF Division I State Championship game last March against Santa Monica
High School. This time Santa Monica won, 66-55.
The Eagles rebounded with back-to-back wins over Granada
Hills Charter and San Gabriel Academy.
Sheldon (3-6) lost its first three games at the Under Armour
Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines High School. They are scheduled to play Newark Memorial on
Mon., Dec. 30 before heading home for the New Years’ holiday.
Bradshaw Christian (1-7) was in Los Angeles for the Maxpreps
Holiday Classic and lost all three games.
