The Sacramento Bee has released its first rankings of the spring season and Elk Grove's baseball and Pleasant Grove's softball teams have been ranked number one in their respective polls.
Pleasant Grove's baseball team has been placed number two in the pre-season list with Franklin eight and Bradshaw Christian 15.
The Herd and the Pride are defending Section champions in their divisions.
Interesting that on Monday Elk Grove scrimmaged both #4 Granite Bay and #5 Oak Ridge and did quite well against them.
Pleasant Grove will be a part of the Boras Baseball Classic, hosted by Elk Grove, during spring break and thus it is likely those two will meet somewhere along the way during that tournament.
Elk Grove is also ranked #11 in the state by CalHiSports. The Herd will officially throw out the first pitch, weather permitting, on Wednesday at Wackman Field against St. Mary's, the team they defeated last spring for the Section championship.
In softball, the Lady Herd is ranked fourth, Sheldon fifth and Cosumnes Oaks 14th by the Bee.
The top-ranked Eagles return the core of the team that finished second to Vintage last spring in the Section championship tournament. This year Celina Matthias and Vanessa Washington lead a very potent team under new co-head coaches Bob Book and Russ Petit.
