Spring Break starts on Monday, but there will be little rest
for a couple local baseball squads. Elk Grove High School will host the
Northern California part of the 32-team Boras Baseball Classic, Apr. 14 – 17,
at McAuliffe Fields.
Pleasant Grove will defend its 2013 Boras North Championship
title next week.

The Eagles will open play on Monday against De La Salle. Elk
Grove will start play in the Boras against Rio Americano. Other first round
games include Christian Brothers vs. Granite Bay, Grant vs. Buchanan, Oak Ridge
vs. Archbishop Mitty, Davis vs. Stockdale (Bakersfield), Foothill vs. Clovis
West and Yuba City vs. St. Francis (Mountain View).
The winner of the 16-team single-elimination tournament will
face Temecula Valley, winners of the Southern California portion of the Boras
Classic, at a date yet to be determined at the University of the Pacific.
The SoCal tournament was played March 29- April 5.
Sports agent Scott Boras, who graduated from Elk Grove High
School, organized the high-profile tournament, now in its second year.
Trey Belton, who will play for Sierra College next season |
Belton Commits To
Sierra College
He was ruled ineligible to play his senior season, but
Sheldon High School’s Trey Belton will resume his basketball career this next
season at Sierra College. Head coach John Fusano confirmed to the Citizen of
Belton’s commitment Monday night.
Belton started his high school career at Elk Grove, then
transferred to Capital Christian High School and played on back-to-back
Division V Sac-Joaquin Section championship squads the next two seasons.
He transferred to Sheldon last summer, but CIF rules
prohibit student/athletes eligibility for one year following a second high
school transfer.
In his junior season at Capital Christian, Belton (6-4, 245
pounds) averaged 10.1 points and 8.1 rebounds a game.
He’ll be joining at Sierra another former Huskie, Antonio
Lewis, who was redshirted this past season.
EG Golf In DVC Second
Place
The Elk Grove High School boys golf squad was in second
place going into Tuesday’s Delta Valley Conference meet at The Reserve at
Spanos Park, a full 70 strokes behind Davis.
Head coach Cliff Cheathon is encouraged with the play of a
pair of freshmen, Mike Salewsky and Jacob Custiodo.
“They have a good mind for golf,” Cheathon said. “Golf
requires so much of your attention, you have to make a commitment to really do
well.”
Cheathon as the golf coach at Monterey Trail tutored current
Jackson State University top golfer James Reede and knows what it takes to play
collegiately.
“It takes four years of real good practice,” he said. “You
have to play and practice at least three days a week. That’s when you get
good.”
Elk Grove’s top golfer this season is Lane Walters, a
senior, who warmed up for Tuesday’s DVC match by firing a 37 on the front nine
Monday at Wild Hawk. This DVC match was the second of four DVC meetings this
spring.
Salewsky is the number two golfer for the Herd. The number
three man is Russell Cook, a former baseball player who badly injured his knee
more than a year ago and hung up his cleats for the spike-less shoes and is
doing quite well.
Jordan Calanchini and Nick Salas round out the Elk Grove
golfers.
The third DVC match is Apr. 22 at Bartley-Cavanaugh and the
final conference outing is Apr. 28 at Wild Hawk.
The Section Division I meet will be May 5 and the Masters
will be May 12 at the Reserve.
