When Elk Grove Unified School District’s athletic director Jim
Smrekar officially retires at the end of the current school year, Todd Reiswig
will not be replacing him.
Reiswig told me following Elk Grove’s 6-5,
nine-inning baseball win over Franklin Monday that he decided he would rather
return to the classroom and one of his true loves – teaching AP Statistics.

The former EGHS varsity basketball coach was the interim
A.D. between October and March this year and dealt with one of the school
district’s toughest investigations, the basketball recruiting scandal at Sheldon
High School.
Following the long investigation headed up by Reiswig, the
Sac-Joaquin Section levied numerous sanctions against the Huskies’ program
which included the immediate ineligibility of five players and banning Sheldon from the post-season.
Once back in the classroom, Reiswig re-thought the prospect
of replacing Smrekar on a long-term basis.
“It was a great experience and I am thankful to (the school
district) for the opportunity,” he said. “I will stay active with CIF.”
Reiswig, 50, is a frequent worker at Section football and
basketball playoff events. He coached the Thundering Herd basketball program
through most of the 1990’s.
The school district just posted the new vacancy on its job
site Monday.
